‘Security Theatre’ examines the role constructed fear plays in our lives and asks the viewer to reflect on the gap between perceived risk and actual risk while traveling by air. The range of cultural processes brought to bear in this phenomenon can be seen in microcosm in an airport building, plans of which can be read as resembling viral organisms. In public spaces dominated by a culture of fear the salt mound and toy plane identify a place for contemplation of increasingly monitored and controlled public spaces.
